What are the beaches like in Nerja in this great seaside resort ?
So your planning a holiday or longer stay in Nerja …
For those who want to explore a little I can heartily recommend a visit to Bodegas Bentomiz, a boutique winery lying in the hills between Sayalonga and Competa less than an hours’ drive from Nerja.
The drive from Nerja passes through the village of Algorrobo and then up into the hills studded with olive, avocado and mango trees. We were in good time so stopped for a coffee in the plaza at Sayalonga, a great place to see village life and watch the world go by. From here it is a few minutes’ drive up the winding road before coming to the hairpin turn into the Bodega’s steep approach road. You hardly notice the winery as you ascend as its stone and slate walls blend into the hillside.
Our tour started at 12.30 and our guide, Rose, told us the story of the Bodega and explained how the wines were made. We got to see the little vines in the steep, stony, terraced hillside and see the vats and barrels where the wine matures. Bodegas Bentomiz makes red white and rose wines as wells as several delicious sweet desert wines so there is something for everybody.
After the tour we went upstairs past a gallery of photos to the tasting room with its amazing views and rather unique floor. We were treated to a tutored tasting of four “Ariyanas” wines and learned more about Clara and Andre, the owners.
We opted to stay on for the 5 course tasting lunch (a three course option is also available) combined with a “flight” of wines. Andre runs the kitchen and all the dishes are designed to showcase the wines. The quality of the food and wine are amazing and I can’t wait to go back for another delicious meal on my next visit to Nerja.
The Bodega is open from Wednesday to Sunday for tours, tasting and lunch which can be booked online at https://bodegasbentomiz.com/tours-tastings-lunches/
