Benajarafe is a town located in the Axarquia region on the coast of the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, Spain,in the heart of the Axarquía,a region that is located on the Costa del Sol in the province of Malaga. It is located 12 kilometers from the city of Vélez-Málaga and 20 kilometers from the provincial capital. Benajarafe enjoys one of the best climates in Europe, with summers in full sun and a calm sea that mimics the tranquility of the village. It is communicated via the Mediterranean Highway (E-15), in the direction of Malaga to Almería.
Benajarafe is divided into two distinct parts, Benajarafe Alto and Benajarafe Costa.
The first is the main sector of the population. It is mainly composed of a lot of cottages, scattered from above to lower to the sea. The people who inhabit it are mainly farmers, and as it is still in the process of urbanization, most of them live in streets without asphalt and even in certain sectors, are surrounded by streams that are enlarged in rainy seasons.
In recent years a significant number of developments have been built, especially on the coast, and in 2005 much of the work was completed that resulted in a promenade worthy of a tourist city. The most important thing for the tourism of this town is without a doubt the immense beach that gives it its length of almost 2 kilometers. The National 340 road separates the beach from the town, giving way to a lot of traffic that preferably moves between Malaga and Vélez-Málaga, although the creation of the highway a few kilometers further in has relieved its inhabitants of the burden that means.
Currently many foreigners, mainly French, German and English, visit the village and many choose it as a place to buy a house where they can spend the summer.
The center of Benajarafe Alto is the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, where every October the pilgrimage that leads to its owner from the church located in Benajarafe Costa on the back of oxen arrives. This church was restored between 1996 and 1999 by the association of neighbors, helped by the Mayor’s Tenure
This area of Benajarafe is articulated mainly by a paved road that starts from the mouth of the Adelfas stream and climbs up to the Loma of the lost child and from there branch numerous dirt roads that lead to homes.
One of the main festivals of the year is Andalusia Day,organized by the Association of Neighbors. The first activity of the day is the hoisting of the flag. Free meals are usually served and recreational events such as games, dances, poetic readings, etc. are held.
In july the local festival is celebrated, the day of the Virgen del Carmen, which is also a regional festival. The image of it is taken from the church to the sea, and at night, the fair takes place.
In October the Romería de la Virgen del Rosario takes place. Two images that symbolize the character of the village, farmer and sailor, are processed from the church to its hermitage. In this festival it is customary to make a communal paella, in which free dishes are served to all the participants.
Every year in August the popular “Feria” of this town is held, it consists of three days in which the festival takes place night and day. From Friday to Sunday, as well as, on Friday there is a great verbena, and Saturday and Sunday usually come to the village, famous singers to accompany the festival, which its duration is called “until the body endures”. On the last day, on Sunday a final course is held with the realization of games and tests for the children of the village in which at the end of them is made an award of awards for the activities and games performed, as the first day of fieria (Friday) the queen and bridesmaids of the fair are chosen, who must parade with the tape in which appears “Queen of the Night” or “1st Bridesmaid” or “2nd Bridesmaid.” With these festivals the realization and incorporation of the people of the village is encouraged to these days, creating a great coexistence.

It is 1,600 meters long and 30 meters wide.

The various services available at the beach make it get awarded the Blue Flag 2019 and it has as well the quality recognition “Q”.
As a leisure option, around this beach, we have Ruta de la pasa, which runs through several towns that have a set of vineyards and raisin beds where the grapes are dried in the sun.
