The Spanish town of Maro is Located on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It is at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol surrounded by protected natural areas and natural landscape. Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo and the natural parks of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama are all in Maro area.
In the in the east of the province Maro is 5 kilometres from Nerja. It is on the border with Granada province. Maro is a typical Spanish town located at the foot of the Sierra Almijara (Natural Park) and on fertile fields of horticultural crops that extend to the sea, forming one of the most beautiful landscapes of the coast. Maro is well cared for, clean and peaceful.

In Roman times its name was Detunda. During the Muslim stage was the production of sugar cane honey. Maro had one of its most prosperous stages in the first third of the 19th century due to the export fruits.
Maro is without doubt a beautiful Spanish town. In Maro are the remains of an old sugar factory which was built in 1585. It operated until a fire destroyed part of it in the nineteenth century.
Today, although it continues to live on agriculture its tourism potential has increased. Certainly this must be due to an interest in the natural spaces that surround it.
The filming of the the series Verano Azul took place in Maro and Nerja. This happened between 1979 and 1980 and used many local locations.
Festivals
In terms of popular festivities, the Fair and Festivities in honor of the Patron Virgin of Wonders (which takes place during the month of September). Also the night of the lights in honor of Saint Anton (mid-January) (both of ancestral origin) stand out. In recent years, the celebration of Halloween night (October 31) has also gained notoriety and locals call it Maroween.
